Thanks to USSEC for inviting Maverick at the Aquaculture Technical Seminar in Dhaka. The seminar was organized by United States Soybean Export Council and attended by aquaculture professionals, feed manufacturers, fish producers, researchers, and other industry stakeholders. Thanks to KhaBiBur RahMan for inviting us and Lukas Manomaitis, Zhou, Hsiang Pin Lan, Prof. Dr S. M. Rafiquzzaman for their insightful presentation. Below is the summary of the presentation given by Dr. Kabir Chowdhury.
Bangladesh farms 2.98 Mt of fish — 5th largest producer in the world — and feed is 65–70% of a farm's operating cost. So what's in the bag matters far more than what's printed on it.
Dr. Kabir Chowdhury mentioned the importance of nutrients available to animal rather than just the nutrient content when formulating a feed. For example, in four soybean samples analyzed, crude protein values ranged from 52.3% to 54.5% dry matter basis, yet essential amino acids were lower in high CP material than the low CP soybean meals. Lysine told the real story: a 15% spread between the best and weakest samples. The same trap shows up in animal proteins: fish meal sold on "60% protein" delivered just 44.8% amino acids, while 55% CP poultry meal supplied more than 49% amino acids.
He suggested formulating on digestible amino acids and energy basis. And judge price per unit of nutrient available — never per tonne of ingredient.
