Farmed fish is often sold as the nutrition win — high protein, omega-3s, low footprint. But that value only holds if we know what else is coming along with it.
A new database built by researchers in India — pulling from 250+ scientific studies — found nearly 690 chemicals in use across global aquaculture, from antibiotics and dyes to herbicides and disinfectants. Only about 8% have any regulatory documentation at all, and a handful, including common additives like copper sulfate, are known to build up in animal tissue.
The gap isn’t necessarily proof of harm — it’s proof of a blind spot. As farmed fish becomes a bigger share of the world’s protein and omega-3 supply, its nutritional promise deserves the same scrutiny as its safety.
Worth asking: can we call a food “nutritious” if we haven’t fully accounted for everything traveling with it?
