Scientists have uncovered a massive hidden library of antiviral proteins inside bacterial genomes. Two new studies used machine‑learning tools to scan thousands of genomes — and found hundreds of thousands of defence proteins we didn’t know existed. More than 85% of them were completely new.
This means bacteria carry far more antiviral strategies than we ever imagined.
Lab tests confirmed many of these systems actually work. They’re real defence tools, not just computer predictions.
Why does this matter?
Because past discoveries like CRISPR also came from bacterial immunity — and went on to transform biotechnology. This new “treasure trove” could spark the next generation of molecular tools for gene editing, diagnostics, and synthetic biology.
If you work in biotech, genomics, or ML‑for‑biology, this is a space worth watching.
