Fish are incredibly sensitive during their earliest life stages — a critical window where nutrition can influence growth, metabolism, cognition, and long‑term resilience. When early diets are suboptimal, the effects can last a lifetime: stunted growth, disrupted metabolic pathways, and reduced survival.
By optimizing early feeding — both maternal reserves and first‑feed diets — we can “program” healthier, more efficient fish. This opens the door to smarter, more sustainable aquaculture systems that use fewer resources while improving performance.
The recently published review highlights big opportunities, but also big questions. With so many species and diverse metabolic responses, there’s still much to uncover. What’s clear is that early nutritional programming could become a powerful tool for sustainable aquaculture.
Early nutrition is not just feed — it’s programming.
