Two major research directions are redefining what recovery after stroke could mean.
A landmark study in Cell shows that blocking the CCR5 receptor—normally involved in inflammation and limiting plasticity—can reopen the brain’s capacity to rewire itself, leading to improved motor and cognitive recovery in animal models.
Complementing this, a 2025 Nature Communications study demonstrates that transplanted iPSC‑derived neural progenitor cells survive long‑term, differentiate into functional neurons, reduce inflammation, enhance angiogenesis, and integrate into damaged circuits.
Together, these findings highlight a future where stroke treatment moves beyond damage control toward true neural repair, combining molecular interventions with regenerative cell therapy.
