Broiler nutrition is entering a new era – where precision, not excess, drives performance. This recently published review by an Australian team highlights how fine‑tuning amino acids and microminerals (Cu, Zn, Mn) can facilitate better growth, stronger gut health, and lower environmental impact in modern farming.
Feed represents 65–70% of broiler production cost, and both crude protein and inorganic minerals are major contributors to nutrient waste. Oversupply leads to nitrogen and heavy‑metal excretion, while undersupply compromises immunity, skeletal integrity, and growth.
Precision nutrition offers a way out of this long‑standing trade‑off.
Key insights:
Amino acids: Balanced and timed delivery matters more than the quantity. Reduced‑crude‑protein diets supplemented with crystalline amino acids can maintain performance while cutting nitrogen excretion. Emerging evidence suggests AM/PM (circadian) feeding could further synchronise amino acid supply with muscle growth rhythms, a promising frontier for broilers.
Microminerals: Organic forms of Cu, Zn, and Mn show 1.2–1.85× higher bioavailability than inorganic salts, enabling lower inclusion rates without sacrificing performance. This directly reduces mineral excretion and environmental loading.
Gut microbiota: Both amino acids and microminerals shape gut microbiome that influence nutrient absorption. Organic minerals and balanced amino acid profiles support beneficial taxa and improve feed efficiency.
Environmental impact: Precision inclusion of amino acids and microminerals can reduce ammonia, nitrogen, and heavy‑metal emissions. These are highly critical as poultry demand is projected to double by 2050.
The opportunity ahead:
Split feeding, organic microminerals, and reduced‑protein diets collectively point toward a future where broiler nutrition is dynamic, microbiota‑aware, and environmentally responsible. The missing piece is the research on diurnal nutrient requirements that could redefine feed formulation strategies.
